Same Sex Marriage
It's Time to End Discrimination Against Same-Sex Couples
Equal Marriage is about basic values of family, love, commitment, fairness, and freedom.
Excluding same-sex couples from marriage harms them, their kids, and our community

Imagine:
Without legal marriage rights same-sex couples face challenges that are overwhelming.
We understand that marriage isn’t for everybody, but we believe that everyone should be permitted the freedom to marry the person they love, regardless of their gender. We have a chance to further the civil rights of people in the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community and help end legal discrimination in New York State. Although an equal marriage law in New York will not grant federal rights (such as social security survivor benefits) and protections, it will enable same-sex couples to access hundreds of rights that other married New Yorkers already have, such as medical decision-making authority for a spouse, inheritance rights, divorce, and the ability to adopt children as a couple.
The time has arrived for New York to enact equal marriage legislation. Polling shows a growing majority of New Yorkers support equal marriage rights for same-sex couples, while public opposition continues to decline. Legislators may try to pose civil unions as a compromise but civil unions can be limited in scope and are not necessarily recognized across state boundaries or the private sector, which, while universally recognizing marriage, is inconsistent in recognizing domestic partnerships or civil unions.
