This morning on NPR, there was a story that the new president of Harvard University is former World Bank, chief economist, Lawrence Summers.
It was Summers who said, "Just between you and me, shouldn't the World Bank be encouraging more migration of the dirty industries to the LDCs [least developed countries]?....I think the economic logic behind dumping a load of toxic waste in the lowest wage country is impeccable and we should face up to that. ... I've always thought that underpopulated countries in Africa are vastly underpolluted; their air quality is vastly inefficiently low compared to Los Angeles or Mexico City."
The story of Summer's appt is on Harvard's website at www.hno.harvard.edu/specials/summers/.
Mokhiber & Weissman wrote an article about Summers, found at
www.aidc.org.za/
and www.archives/usts_wb.html.
If I was a student at Harvard, I'd protest this appointment and
I'd send a letter to each member of the search committee, which
can be found, by the way, at the bottom of this page,
www.hno.harvard.edu/specials/summers/search_process.html.
Even if I wasn't a student, I'd write a letter of protest and condemnation.
