Global Conflicts and Local Responsibility
Published February 2002, 1st/2nd of March 2002

Free workshops and screenings at the University of Rochester This event centers around two Rochester premiere film screenings,

* Anand Patawardhan's War and Peace (2001) which details the conflicts between Pakistan and India and their emergence as nuclear powers, while reminding us of the historical horrors created by nuclear weapons

* and Stephanie Black's award winning documentary, Life and Debt (2001), which focuses on the declining fortunes of Jamaica in a global economy.

Patawardhan and Black will be present at these events and will host a question/answer period following each screening. Life and Debt in particular presents compelling evidence of the failure of the neoliberal economics model.

These films will be accompanied by a day-long series of panels and workshops which will serve to encourage awareness about these and other global issues. The panels will address issues of media representation and terrorism; gender and global conflict; and civil liberties within homeland defense.

Panel moderators and participants TBA. Call Mike Baker at 461-5949
