Rochester Clergy Unite Behind Crowne Plaza Workers
     UNITE HERE

Rochester hotel workers are currently trying to form a union at the Crowne Plaza Rochester. Many of these workers make poverty-level wages and many cannot afford health care. Hotel management and the owner are running an anti-union campaign inside of the hotel.

Hotel workers have been supported by Rochester Clergy and Laity United for Economic Justice (C.L.U.E.), a historic alliance of churches and faith groups representing thousands of members of Rochester’s religious community.

Members of Rochester CLUE ended their series of meetings with the General Manager of the Crowne Plaza, Paul Kremp. Clergy asked Mr. Kremp to abide by a set of community organizing standards designed by CLUE to provide hotel workers with a free and fair process, a request that Kremp has refused.

Rochester CLUE will be launching a citywide initiative on behalf of hotel workers in response to Kremp’s refusal to abide by the standards.

In a strongly worded letter to Kremp, CLUE expressed frustration with the recalcitrant hotel management saying they were saddened by Kremp’s “refusing to abide by the Organizing Standards as they apply to the Crowne Plaza employees seeking to organize a union.

The clergy in CLUE had requested a “free and open process, protecting the rights of the employees to organize.” They end the letter pledging to continue their support for the workers of the Crowne Plaza.
