Time and time again, residents of the City have demanded a public utility feasibility study. We need our elected officials to demonstrate a willingness to stand up for our city instead of hiding behind the County Legislature's misleadership! City residents are the hardest hit by RG&E’s crushing rates and erratic misbilling that so often spiral families into crisis. The recent RG&E audit is truly startling shows the utility has major safety and compliance issues and is not even making plans or reporting accurately at the utility level.
The City of Rochester already set aside funds for a study. They need to use that money to commission a Phase 1 study. And at the very least, they need to re-reserve the funds they've already set aside.
We deserve a future in which we are no longer beholden to a profit-driven, foreign company for our basic energy needs. It’ll take a lot of public pressure from constituents like you to outweigh RG&E's political influence and convince the City to lead where the County refuses.
Most transitions to a public utility happen at the City level. Recent studies in San Diego, Decorah, Pueblo, Long Island, Maine, Tucson, and Winter Park all found that taking over their privately owned utilities would result in significant cost savings for residents, even after they paid for the cost of purchasing the grid from the private utility.
What we need to move forward now is a third party, independent study that gives us the facts to know if a public utility is feasible in the City and the County and how to do it - including cost, modernizing the grid, green energy planning, and workforce development for more local union jobs.
So show up with us at the City Council Meeting and Budget Vote on Tuesday, June 17th at Rochester City Hall (30 Church Street, Rochester, NY, 14614). You can bring signs, and wear RED!
The City can choose to lead -- be there to call on them to do so! RSVP Below!
