Our current energy system is ruled by for-profit oil and gas companies, and for-profit utility corporations like Rochester Gas & Electric (RG&E). As a result, we pay expensive energy bills while the continued use of fossil fuels pushes us towards catastrophic environmental damage that jeopardizes our futures. In fact, RG&E must charge rates that guarantee its investors a 9% profit margin. That means in 2018, RG&E made $595 million in profit by charging residents like us extortionate rates, neglecting grid infrastructure, continued investment in fossil fuel, and shutting people’s power off when they could not afford their inflated bills. We’ve had enough.
We call for an energy system that meets the needs of our communities instead of meeting the greed of distant investors and CEOs. We call for a shift to 100% clean and renewable energy. We believe this is possible if we build a community owned and operated energy economy. Rochester residents should get a say in what energy we use, where we get it, what we pay, and how that money can be used to benefit our community. That is why I support replacing RG&E with a public utility and community-owned clean energy projects.
