I want to replace RG&E with a local, community controlled public utility!

Did you know that we can vote out the foreign-owned corporation that owns and controls RG&E? RG&E is owned by a foreign multinational corporation called Iberdrola that extracts over $120 million in profits from our region every year. Rochester for Energy Democracy (RED) is Metro Justice’s campaign to replace foreign-owned RG&E in Rochester or Monroe County into a not for profit, locally controlled public utility.

RG&E's track record speaks volumes—surprise billing, exorbitant rates and shut offs, terrible customer service, and rising rates have plagued our community for far too long. In addition to being unresponsive to the needs of city residents, RG&E has all but ignored the impending climate crisis, continued to invest in fossil fuels, and lobbied against green energy policies. It's time for change.

By signing this petition, I support the call to replace RG&E with a locally owned and community controlled public utility that meets the needs of our communities instead of serving the greed of distant investors and CEOs. I want a public utility based on the principles of energy democracy:

  • Affordable Rates,
  • Local investment of ratepayer dollars to prioritize customer service and a reliable grid,
  • A fast and equitable transition to zero greenhouse gas emissions,
  • More good paying union jobs and a just transition for fossil fuel energy workers,
  • Public ownership of the utility, where it is run by value-aligned general management and its current employees, governed by an elected Board of Directors, and has a real say for ratepayers.

In particular, I call on elected leaders to take the first step and study whether and how a public utility could meet these goals.

I don’t trust those smart meters, my bill fluctuates way to much for those meters to be truly accurate,

RGE is gouging me. It also makes the website not work and prevents my ability to pay and it shut down my service this past November. My current bill jumped to $372 this month (Feb 2025), the largest I have ever seen. My most expensive month ever was $225 until this month. The new meters are gouging us.

Don’t have to think twice about pushing for an alternative to the terrible rg&e, the company that drains us of our hard earned dollars while giving you the worst service you’ve ever seen. These people get lazy when there’s no alternative, so this is a no brainer folks.

Moving from Denver, where the average utility burden for renters is around 2.5% to Rochester, where, despite an overall lower cost of living, utilities are around 4x more expensive, has been quite a shock. Going from about $45 a month for heating in the winter, to around $120 does not compute. There is no excuse for a highly profitable company providing ESSENTIAL utilities ever needs to be cutting service to people or raising rates to cover their extremely fat margins. It is cold cruelty to run a service this way and we need a public, non-profit option.

RG&E’s continued illegal shutoff practices and billing errors are putting lives in danger. They need to be reined in and stopped and be replaced by a public utility.

RGE tried to shut down our home energy in September 2024. They upcharged us because “no one was home” to get a meter read (they never sent anyone during the planned times)

It is ridiculous that city residents have to deal with such high profit gouging prices. Enjoy the heat while you can get it.
