Women's Equality Act Petition

WEA_Laura.jpgOn January 27th, 2014 the New York State Assembly once again passed the Women's Equality Act - the 10-point plan to help eradicate gender inequality and discrimination in our state. And again, the New York State Senate looks like they're going to refuse to allow this essential bill come to a vote.

The Women's Equality Act secures equal pay for equal work, provides fair access to housing for women and families that rely on subsidized housing, ends housing discrimination for victims of domestic violence, safeguards reproductive rights, ends employment and pregnancy discrimination, and so much more!

We won't allow the Republicans and Independent Democratic Caucus to continue playing politics with the lives of women in our state. Metro Justice is standing up and continuing to demand immediate passage of this act.

I sign this petition to call on the New York State Senate to bring to a vote and approve the Women's Equality Act as passed by the Assembly on January 27th, 2014. New York State laws need an upgrade and New York needs genuine Women's Equality now!

Women desire equal pay. Jobs that are worked by predominately Women are underpaid and underregonized undervalued. We do not get deserved raises or good health care.

Unfortunately, the equal pay bill was shot down by other women. Women who did not have to work to support their families. Let’s not let that happen a second time. Thank you.

I’ve been working over 20 years in my field – with a masters degree, plus and advanced certificate of study and two national certifcations just to get over the $60,000 per year mark. Plus I do numerous professional developments at my own expense every year to keep current. If I were a male in a hard science field rather than a “soft” science field I woudl have started at that salary, my company would be paying me to get more training and probably would have paid for my PHD. And in hard times my posisition is one of the first to be looked at to cut- luckily I excell at what I do and am an active advocate for my profession. It’s about time we get it right and make America a family friendly country by treating women right: with equal pay, benefits, and family supports!

I cannot be more disappointed that in 2014, legislators still have not passed this equality act.
