Time and time again, residents of the City have demanded a public utility feasibility study. We need our elected officials to demonstrate a willingness to stand up for our city instead of hiding behind the County Legislature's misleadership! City residents are the hardest hit by RG&E’s crushing rates and erratic misbilling that so often spiral families into crisis. 

The City of Rochester already set aside funds for a study last year that expire this June. They need to re-allocate that money as a step towards a fully funded study, and they also need to commit to a locally led study. 

Most transitions to a public utility happen at the City level. Recent studies in San Diego, Decorah, Pueblo, Long Island, Maine, and Winter Park all found that taking over their privately owned utilities would result in significant cost savings for residents, even after they paid for the cost of purchasing the grid from the private utility. 

What we need to move forward now is a third party, independent study that gives us the facts to know if a public utility is feasible in the City and the County and how to do it - including cost, modernizing the grid, green energy planning, and workforce development for more local union jobs. The “Pact with The People”-- put forward by the majority of City Council – neglects to mention RG&E, a public utility, the astronomical energy burden Rochester residents are under, and climate change or green energy. If this City Council truly wants to help people, they need to recommit to funding a public study.
