People's Power March

Join our march to launch Metro Justice's campaign to takeover RG&E and create a public utility in our region! We will hear from residents, union workers, and elected representatives on why we need a public, local, and democratically governed utility and how we can get there.

We march on Friday, September 24th, beginning at the RG&E Office at 89 East Avenue. We will gather at 4:30 PM at the RG&E Office on 89 East Avenue. Then we will march to Rochester City Hall for a rally to demand the creation of a public utility to replace RG&E. Stay tuned for announcements on speakers, cosponsors of our campaign, and specific demands to move us towards establishing a public utility in Rochester.

For decades, Rochester Gas and Electric (RG&E) has exploited residents of Rochester with rate hikes, shut offs in winter, power outages caused by a disastrously maintained grid, and poor service. From the thousands of harassing illegal shut-off notices RG&E sent out during the pandemic, to their failure to consistently keep the power on in our communities during some of the hottest stretches of this summer, this past year has only further underscored the many ways in which Rochester is neglected for our energy needs. With record heat and rain this summer, it is also apparent how much we need our utility to be a partner in preparing the region for the turbulence of a warming planet. Instead, RG&E has proven they are not interested in nor capable of being that partner for Rochester.

With a public utility, our community and energy workers will make decisions about energy sources, rates, and how the money we pay is used to reinvest in our region. A public utility will be cheaper, more reliable, and capable of a rapid green energy transition. A local public utility will also mean more local union jobs in maintenance, expanding renewable energy infrastructure, and administration.

No more shareholders. No more profits leaving our community. Come fight with us and demand a more sustainable, democratic energy future for our communities!
