The Metro Justice Elder Justice Committee, has called on the New York Legislature to pass the Safe Staffing Act which would set minimum level of staffing in nursing homes and hospitals. It's time to give seniors their due and insure that they get a modicum of care. Weekends and nights for residents in nursing homes are frequently a nightmare. There is not adequate staff to keep the clients safe and healthy! However, governor Cuomo and key legislative leaders want to delay and "study" the problem which is already well documented.
If you have visited your loved one in a nursing home you have witnessed this’, said Baer and Traub. 'We view the Study proposed by the Executive and passed by the Legislature as an insult to the senior citizen community and the thousands of folks who visit nursing homes. We have known what has to be done for years through research and anecdotal information.” We are today launching a petition drive Statewide to urge Legislators to pass the Bill this session.
The Elder Justice Committee, in coalition with other groups, will hold a press conference this Friday, April 26 at 10:00 AM in front of the Brighton Manor nursing home located at 989 Blossom Rd, Rochester, NY 14610, to call for passage of the Safe Staffing Act, which sets minimum nursing staffing levels for nursing homes and hospitals and to begin gathering signatures via the petition linked below.
