Energy Democracy 101

We welcome you to Metro Justice’s Rochester for Energy Democracy (RED): a grassroots movement to replace RG&E with a public, not-for-profit utility with commitments to a green and just transition.

A public utility will be cheaper, safer, and in a better position to invest in renewable energy. It will recognize energy as a human right, so residents will no longer have to worry about not having electricity and heat in the winter or times of financial hardship. It will allow us to do our part to address the climate crisis because decisions about energy sources, rates, and investment in our energy infrastructure will be made by our community and energy workers, not by unaccountable shareholders that prioritize their own profit. This utility will be controlled by and therefore serve our community.

During this teach-in, volunteer leaders with RED will discuss how RG&E harms Rochester residents, how a not-for-profit public and community-led utility would be better, where we are in our local and statewide campaigns, and how we can win! Join us to learn more about public power and how you can join the movement.
