Inequality and the NY State Budget

cuomo_ugly.jpgOver the past two years, Governor Cuomo and the State Legislature have cut billions of dollars and thousands of jobs from the state budget, delaying New York’s recovery from the recession and economic meltdown caused by the Wall Street collapse.

The number-one category for lost jobs every month here in New York is state and local government — teachers, firefighters, bus drivers and after-school instructors keep getting laid off, and our cities, towns and neighborhoods continue to lose the good, stable middle-class jobs that are the backbone of every local economy.

On Monday, February 24th Metro Justice is bringing Mike Kink, Executive Director of Strong Economy for All, to Rochester to speak about the New York State budget. Kink will cover details on austerity cuts to education and human services, tax breaks for the wealthy and well-connected, and what this budget means in historical context. Join us to learn what this budget means for the Rochester community and how we can work to shape a budget that is fair and works for all New Yorkers.

And while this budget sucks...over 1 million people will not have representation because there are 11 open seats in nys and no special elections...
