In the last week, Spectrum has begun to proceed with efforts to evict a homeless encampment near their offices. The encampment is out of the way and on unused land. Nonetheless, Spectrum has worked to further destabilize the lives of a number of homeless residents of Rochester.
Rents increasing, gentrification pushing many neighborhoods to the brink and an epidemic of poverty has led to a housing and homeless crisis. When people are pushed to the edge, they need a community that stands up and supports them, not eviction without notice.
Spectrum has already shown themselves to be bad corporate neighbors. Early on Tuesday morning, they worked with the RPD to push forward an eviction. Community allies, including members of Metro Justice stood alongside the people living there to defend the space. You can see video of the effort on our facebook page. You can also find that they've not been great with the law themselves. Last year, Attorney General Schneiderman announced a lawsuit against Spectrum for defrauding customers. The damages of this fraud could be "upwards of hundreds of millions of dollars". Read more about the suit here.
Join us on Thursday for a picket of Spectrum. Tell them to let the encampment stay.
