Act in solidarity with the Rochester Teachers Association (RTA) and New York State United Teachers (NYSUT) to stop the Rochester Board of Education from rushing mid-year budget cuts that would devastate our schools and students.
To solve a deficit of $64.8 million, RCSD Superintendent Terry Dade has proposed a 5% across-the-board cut in staffing. Staff will be notified of potential job loss on December 4th; and, if the plan is approved by the Rochester Board of Education, staff cuts will take effect sometime between December 19th and early January.
These cuts mean:
- Eliminating 326 staff positions, including 194 teachers, and 15 support staff like tutors, counselors, and social workers
- Some schools shortening the school day by 1 hour
- Cuts from alternative programs like LyncX Academy, Young Mothers and NorthSTAR which help the district's most vulnerable students
Such cuts would already be immensely disruptive for staff and students regardless of timing. These cuts are especially jarring for our students and teachers mid-year.
Our schools need stability for our students to flourish. We are calling on Metro Justice members like you to rally at the upcoming Rochester Board of Education meeting. Together we can prevent mid-year budget cuts and ensure a stable school year for our district's students and staff.
The rally will be this Thursday, December 5th at 4 PM located at the RCSD District Office, 131 W Broad St. Then, we will pack the board meeting beginning at 6 PM.
RSVP below and where a Metro Justice shirt/pin if you have one! You can also check out the Facebook page.
