Urge the Rochester City Council to include funding for the public utility study, which has support from the public and elected officials!
On June 20th starting at 6pm, join Metro Justice at Rochester City Hall to come watch City Council vote for next year's budget. We are hopeful that they will side with the community and not RG&E and advance an amendment to reserve funding for an implementation study that would investigate replacing RG&E with a public utility that would lower rates, create good union jobs, and implement a clean energy transition.
As the people of Rochester have suffered through the RG&E crisis, Metro Justice has been fighting to replace the multinational corporate management of RG&E that drains $100 million in profits a year from our region with a local public utility accountable to serving our communities. Such a transformative solution is complex and requires expert study.
For months now, Metro Justice has been working with both the City of Rochester and Monroe County governments on jointly funding an implementation study for a local public solution. Through building community power, Metro Justice has secured the support of a City Council majority for such a study. At the County, both the Legislature President and Democratic Minority Leader support it. The Democratic State Delegation has also advocated for study funding. Now is the time for to act on that commitment.
Already on March 24th Mayor Evans and City Council stated the need for a study, among other reasons, to reduce the burden of high energy bills for Rochester’s working families, but asked the NY Public Service Commission to do it. But the PSC only "regulates" RG&E from Albany, so that's not a real solution.
The real solution to the RG&E crisis is a public utility. You can be a part of that solution by joining others in showing support for the public power study at the public hearing for the City Council budget vote!
Gather, sign in, and check in with each other starting at 6 for the City Council budget vote at Tuesday, June 20th at 6:30.
Location is the City Hall steps, then Rochester City Hall City Council Chambers (30 Church Street, Rochester, NY, 14614). Show up to show council that the community is watching and needs them to take the first step by reserving funding for a study in the budget.
