Oppose RG&E Latest Rate Hikes! Join the Movement for Public Power
RG&E is trying to raise our rates by another 34% — an increase that would add $623 a year to the average household’s bill and push 50,000 more Rochester families into energy poverty. That means over half of Rochester households could be at risk of not being able to afford their basic energy needs.
All this — after a state audit revealed widespread mismanagement and safety violations by RG&E. Instead of taking responsibility, RG&E has the audacity to request an increase in their profit rate to 10%, even though experts say utility profits should be closer to 6%. Meanwhile, profits for RG&E’s parent company, Avangrid, have skyrocketed 183% since 2015. Enough is enough.
A new analysis assessing the profits of New York’s five major for-profit, investor-owned utilities: found that Avangrid owned utilities (RG&E, NYSEG) increased their profits 183% since 2015! We've had MORE than enough of this multinational company gouging us, while our elected leaders look on instead of studying the common-sense solution of a public utility!
It's time to get LOUD in the streets!
We are convening a movement assembly on Saturday November 8, from 1-4pm, location First Church of God 334 Clarissa Street - as a space for ally organizations and new people to get informed on the rate hikes, the public power campaign and plug into planning for a December action as RG&E continues to gouge and shut off its Rochester customers.
We need a public utility that’s accountable to us — not a multinational corporation that gouges our community.
